Wuhan Customs has introduced a new regulatory model at the cross-border e-commerce warehouse in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ)'s comprehensive bonded zone.
Customs officers can now scan the factory barcodes on imported shoes from Europe, providing instant access to critical information, such as product origin, production batch, and inventory location, boosting import clearance efficiency.
This initiative marks Wuhan Customs' pioneering effort in embedding smart regulation by integrating GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) barcodes into e-commerce goods.
"In the past, importing e-commerce products required manually re-entering SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) codes, which was inefficient and posed significant risks of mismatches," said Zhang Wenwu, warehouse manager at a local warehousing services company.
With enhanced traceability and verification, the average clearance efficiency for bonded import goods has improved. As a result, the bonded zone achieved imports and exports of 18.73 billion yuan ($2.79 billion) from January to July, a year-on-year growth of 222.9 percent.
