Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) has implemented measures to combat the soaring summer heat, which has reached 37 C. As part of these efforts, 49 community cooling centers have been opened to the public free of charge.
At the Xianglong community cooling center, residents participate in a range of activities organized by community staff members, including brooch-making.
The center has welcomed nearly 50 residents daily since its opening on July 17, offering services such as free medical consultations, health lectures, and handicraft classes. Visitors are also provided with cooling refreshments like sour plum soup and watermelon.
At their local cooling center, residents of Longhu community relax with complimentary mung bean soup, play chess, watch TV shows, and socialize. The canteen offers a variety of dishes, including cauliflower with pork, fish-flavored pork, and stir-fried green beans.
The Longhu elderly care center and cooling center can accommodate over 200 residents per day. Liu Kai, Party secretary of the community, said the authorities have organized activities such as painting, handicraft workshops and health lectures. They have also created a lively community space where residents gather to play chess and table tennis, exercise their hands and fingers, and socialize.
A local official said that authorities will continue to monitor weather changes and adjust and optimize the facilities and services at each cooling center as needed.
