Tanshan Island's artificial wetland park in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) has blossomed into a lively urban oasis, offering a fragrant retreat with blooming flowers, shaded pathways, and diverse recreational spaces.
Once a malodorous pig farm, the area has undergone a dramatic transformation. Mr Liu, a local resident, recalls: "In the past, you couldn't even come near this place. In summer, you had to hold your nose just to pass by. Now, with clear waters and abundant flowers, my family visits every week."

A key attraction is the park's extensive subsurface wetlands, where aquatic plants, including canna and iris, create a picturesque landscape while playing a vital role in water purification. Their robust root systems absorb and decompose pollutants, improving water quality from below Grade V to a stable Grade IV.
The park also serves as a sports haven for the community, featuring a 2.5-kilometer fitness greenway that connects various sports facilities, including basketball courts, table tennis areas, and five-a-side football fields.
The park now features a camping base, convenience stores, and play areas. A water park and petting zoo are set to open this summer, and the planned fun park will include eight distinct zones with themed activities and water-themed educational tours.
