Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) has made remarkable progress in economic and social development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), achieving significant breakthroughs in industry, technological innovation, and urban transformation.

WEDZ's economic output has nearly reached 230 billion yuan ($32 billion), driven by a 42,000-enterprise increase. The industrial landscape has been reshaped, especially within the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector.

NEV production has skyrocketed to 500,000 units, supported by the establishment and operation of six new NEV manufacturing plants. The digital economy has also thrived, with core industry revenues surpassing 50 billion yuan.

High-tech industries have emerged as a cornerstone of WEDZ's economy, accounting for 45.7 percent of GDP, largely due to the new campuses of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan University of Technology in Junshan New City.

Two national institutes for outstanding engineers have also been established, and the number of high-tech enterprises has exceeded 2,000, with the zone also hosting 35 foreign-funded R&D centers. Foreign direct investment has surpassed $2 billion, attracting nearly 500 foreign enterprises to the area.

Infrastructure improvements, such as the completion and operation of Metro Line 16, have enhanced connectivity within the zone. The resident population of WEDZ has grown to 735,000, alongside substantial enhancements in the quality and availability of educational and healthcare resources.
