Hydrogen energy is becoming an integral part of daily life in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ). Hydrogen-powered buses navigate the streets, hydrogen scooters facilitate short-distance travel on campuses, and hydrogen heavy trucks are a common sight.
WEDZ has established a comprehensive industrial chain, spanning from upstream hydrogen production and storage, through midstream fuel cell development and testing, to downstream vehicle production and operational services.
The zone has attracted a number of major industry players, including Dongfeng Motor, Troowin, and Hybot. Construction began on a groundbreaking 4-billion-yuan ($567.59 million) hydrogen technology industrial park in 2024 – the first of its kind in the province. The park aims to become a hub for research and development, production, pilot testing, and incubation, enhancing industrial synergy.
Significant breakthroughs have been achieved in key upstream technologies. Wuhan Vision Hydrav has developed a new generation of fuel cell engines that consume as little as 7 kilograms of hydrogen per 100 kilometers. Hybot has launched the world's first hydrogen fuel cell truck designed for mainline logistics.
Hydrogen Green Dynamic New Energy (Wuhan) Co has established seven core production lines for proton exchange membranes and water electrolysis membranes. Its annual capacity supports the production of core materials and components for 10,000 hydrogen fuel cells, as well as 5,000 stacks and systems.
As hydrogen energy applications continue to expand, Dongfeng Motor's hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have exceeded 6,000 units in cumulative sales, backed by 830 related patents. The company's technological reserves and industrialization capabilities are steadily enhancing.
Hydrogen applications are extending into energy and industrial sectors. Hydrogen Green is converting byproduct hydrogen from chemical parks into energy, and pushing hydrogen internal combustion generator sets into commercial operation.
