Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) has marked a significant advancement in green shipbuilding with the launch of Yongliang 003, the first locally-built 10,000-metric-ton LNG-powered multipurpose vessel, on Aug 10.

Constructed by San Dianshui New Energy Technology (Hubei) Co, the 109.98-meter ship features cutting-edge LNG mono-fuel propulsion technology that reduces carbon emissions by over 20 percent compared to traditional fuel systems. Its innovative design includes a rounded stern, vertical bow, and double-engine configuration that enhances navigation efficiency by 15 percent.

The vessel's debut represents a strategic expansion of Wuhan's new energy sector from automotive to maritime applications. Since establishing its Central China headquarters in the zone's comprehensive bonded area last December, San Dianshui has moved rapidly, completing the vessel's construction in just six months – a testament to Wuhan's efficient industrial ecosystem. The company has contracts to build nine additional LNG-powered ships, with two more vessels scheduled for launch by November.

"Yongliang 003" will enter service on Yangtze River trade routes later this year, carrying both bulk cargo and containers. Wuhan authorities plan to utilize this breakthrough to develop a complete green shipbuilding industrial chain, combining the zone's manufacturing strengths with port logistics advantages to position Wuhan as a leader in sustainable maritime transportation.
