China's first hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set has commenced commercial operations in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ).

Developed by Hydrogen Green Dynamics (Wuhan) Co, this project marks a pivotal step in utilizing industrial byproduct hydrogen, a crucial yet often wasted resource. This hydrogen is released during industrial processes involving coke oven gas, refinery gas, and chlor-alkali chemical tail gas, with over 30 billion cubic meters wasted annually due to storage and transport challenges.

The generator set will be deployed in a chemical park in Yunmeng county, Hubei province, utilizing local industrial byproduct hydrogen for electricity, heating, and cooling. Plans include deploying over 10 units to provide scalable solutions for hydrogen consumption and carbon reduction.

A single 300-kilowatt unit, operating 6,000 hours annually, can consume 1.4 million cubic meters of hydrogen and generate 22.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, reducing CO2 emissions by 1,100 metric tons, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 50,000 trees.

Hydrogen Green Dynamics, which excels in hydrogen engine power generation and energy storage, aims to convert industrial byproduct hydrogen into clean energy. Cheng Xiaobei, company chairman, highlighted the generator's 44 percent thermal efficiency - a first for high-power hydrogen engines.
