An automobile industry project match-making activity for the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) and the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC) took place on April 3 in WEDZ.

This event, hosted by the Wuhan Municipal People's Government and organized by units such as the administrative committees of both OVC and WEDZ, was organized in a bid to promote the in-depth integration of the electronic information and automobile manufacturing sectors.

A total of 15 technology commercialization project contracts were inked, involving contract amount of 3.13 billion yuan ($441.33 million). Among them, six projects have settled in WEDZ to accelerate the transfer of technologies in auto chips, power cells and smart cockpits fields. 21 innovative enterprises also conducted roadshows on the occasion.

Scholars from colleges and research institutes, as well as corporate representatives from optoelectronic information and intelligent connected and new energy vehicle (NEV) industrial chains, were invited to the event to discuss the forming of a cross-regional and cross-field industrial coordination and technology innovation ecosystem.

Both OVC and WEDZ are robust economy contributors in Wuhan. The Optics Valley of China is the core construction area for building Wuhan into a nationally influential sci-tech innovation center, with its optoelectronic information industry standing out, and its technologies in optical communications, chips, displays, software, algorithm, and BeiDou navigation being applied on the road or vehicles.

WEDZ is currently leading the Wuhan-Xiangyang-Shiyan-Suizhou national auto industrial cluster. It is home to nine automakers, 14 vehicle manufacturing workshops and more than 1,200 auto spare part providers, boasting a solid industrial foundation and abundant application scenarios.

Last August, WEDZ rolled out an action plan (2023-25) to upgrade its new energy and intelligent connected vehicle industry, proposing that the zone and the valley work together to build a brand-new ecosystem that enables auto manufacturers to work with leading companies in fields such as 5G communications, AI, high precision maps, auto chips, and BeiDou navigation systems. They are expected to jointly develop technologies and produce more supporting products.
