The first 2K high-frequency PWM flexible display used in smartphones in China has entered mass production at the Wuban base of TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology recently.
High-frequency PWM — or pulse width modulation — is able to adjust the luminance of displays depending on various conditions, such as when a user goes indoors from bright outdoor sunlight or turns on a light in darkness. The idea is to ease eye strain.
The technology is seen a major breakthrough in the telephone display sector. The product was co-developed by TCL CSOT and smartphone vendor Xiaomi. Consumers have favored 2K flexible displays because of their high resolution. However, the core technology has been monopolized by foreign companies for a long time.
TCL CSOT invested more than 75 billion yuan ($10.76 billion) in the Wuhan manufacturing base.
