The Department of Economy and Information Technology of Hubei Province recently revealed the province's first group of innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A total of 3,862 companies made the list, including 190 firms based in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ), accounting for 10.77 percent of Wuhan's total.
Innovative SMEs are highly professional firms with strong innovative capabilities and development potential. Companies must first become innovative SMEs before they can be selected as provincial or national-level specialized and new little giant companies.
The majority of the 190 firms that made the list are part of the "3335" modern industrial system, especially in fields of new energy and intelligent connected vehicles, hydrogen energy, and optoelectronic semiconducting materials, where they have developed new technologies and products.
To date, the zone has successfully cultivated 26 national-level and 118 provincial-level specialized and new little giant companies as well as 82 gazelle firms, and it is home to 81 R&D institutions at or above the provincial level.
This year, the number of high-tech enterprises in the zone is expected to exceed 1,000.
