Testing is a must before a new car model can enter the market - all cars must be strictly tested thousands of times and be certified by the administrative department.

Every day, new energy vehicles (NEV) and key automobile spare parts are sent to the national quality test center for NEVs based in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ).

The center was built in 2019 using the technologies developed by CATARC Automotive Inspection Center (Wuhan) Co, making up for a lack of third-party NEV testing institutions in Central China.

After three years of development, it has established seven comprehensive laboratories focusing on automotive functions, special tests for NEVs, crash safety tests, electromagnetic compatibility, and energy-saving and sustainability tests, offering one-stop automobile testing services for car manufacturers.

"Our clients are from all over China," said Wang Chenyang, a senior leader at the center. According to him, the center's vehicle testing ability as well as its testing equipment advancement all rank among the top in China.

This year, the center has taken the lead in the nation in conducting simulated crash tests that combine active and passive safety.

Tests for collision and pedestrian protection are now available through the use of dummies for high-end automotive R&D, high-definition cameras, data acquisition instruments, and three-coordinate measuring machines. Dummies placed inside the car can simulate the effect on passengers with sensors all over their bodies.

During the 14th Five-Plan period (2021-25), the center will enhance its cooperation with overseas certification bodies and scientific institutes, as well as increase its comprehensive automobile testing capability to help more domestic car brands go global.
