The China New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Development High-Level Forum 2022 was held on Sept 23 in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ), in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province.

The forum was titled "Building a New Development Paradigm, Creating a New Ecology", and academicians, entrepreneurs, and industry insiders of the automobile industry were invited to discuss how Hubei should build a top-notch auto industrial cluster under the new development paradigm.

Meanwhile, the Hubei NEV and Intelligent Connected Vehicle (ICV) Expert Advisory Committee was unveiled the same day, with its expert panel consisting of 19 academicians and entrepreneurs. The new institution will reportedly provide consultation services for the top-down designs and strategic plans for NEV and ICV development, major project attraction, and coordinated innovation among different industries in the province.

Representatives from domestic and overseas automobile-making and software giants, such as BYD, Dongfeng, Three Gorges, and Neusoft, were invited to deliver keynote speeches.

Zhu Yanfeng, president of Dongfeng Motor Co, cited Dongfeng as one of the first enterprises to have systematically planned and strategically pushed forward with the NEV layout. Dongfeng was born and has thrived in Hubei and will promote the sustainable development of NEVs together with its business partners.

Lei Mingshan, president of China Three Gorges Co, highlighted the integrated development of the new energy and auto sectors as major trends, opportunities and careers against a dual-carbon backdrop.

Liu Jiren, chairman of Neusoft – China's first listed software firm – said that the challenge of the auto industry in the information era not only lies in technological support, but also in the fusion of the software and manufacturing businesses.

Zhou Ji, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that the new era of sci-tech revolution and the fourth industrial revolution have historically overlapped with China's endeavor to transform its economic development approach, and the meeting-point for the three areas is smart manufacturing.

The next 15 years are a key development period for smart manufacturing technologies. China needs to synergize digitalization, intelligentization and networking, which is completely different from what many Western developed countries are doing, in order to lead the world in this area, Zhou added.
