Wuhan WUT HyPower Technology Co, which is based in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ), has been named the world's fifth largest membrane electrode assembly (MEA) supplier.

"The catalyst coated membrane (CCM) that we have independently developed has been widely applied in mainstream hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and has been exported to more than 10 countries and regions, including the United States, Germany and South Korea," said Tian Mingxing, manager of the company.

One galvanic pile contains 300-400 MEAs, and their costs account for over 60 percent of the total costs of the pile. The performance of MEAs directly determines the function of the hydrogen fuel cell, said Tian.

China had long been depending on MEAs from abroad due to the technological monopoly of several American and Japanese companies.

As one of the first firms to focus on MEA R&D, Wuhan WUT HyPower Technology Co has developed its MEA technology and achieved its scale production since 2006.

Financed by a national technological project, the company also created the first automated MEA production line in China, whose annual output is five times that of a traditional production line.
