With a total length of 25 kilometers, the Maying River in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) connects eight large irrigation canals and six lakes included on the list of lakes under the municipal government's protection, with the entire river basin occupying an area of 152 square kilometers. As the largest natural river in Hannan district, the river is tasked with irrigation, flood drainage and other important missions.

Four years ago, the river was plagued with problems such as water quality deterioration and river channel sedimentation. Over the past few years, the WEDZ government has expanded its investment in the renovation of the river and has launched a series of projects for coastal regions and lakeside landscapes.

Now the clear water and intoxicating scenery of the river have attracted surrounding residents to spend holidays there.

"Our next goal is to develop fish communities in the river and establish an auxiliary purification system for it," said a manager in charge of the river governance project.
