The international education and sci-tech innovation park (Junshan Campus) of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was launched in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) on July 15. The construction of Lotus's global intelligent workshop also concluded that same day.

Two months ago, Wuhan University of Technology initiated the Wuhan artificial intelligence and new energy vehicle industrial technology research institute projects on Dajun Mountain.

Since last year, WEDZ has been tasked with three national missions – developing an intelligent city infrastructure and intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) integration pilot zone, a strong transportation network trial zone, and the National Intelligent Connected Vehicle (Wuhan) Pilot Testing Zone. Meanwhile, three Wuhan-based universities included in the "double first-class project" agreed to lay out education programs in the Junshan area.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a new focus in the global sci-tech competition. Boasting the largest domestic autonomous driving demonstration zone with 5G intelligent vehicle infrastructure cooperative systems (IVICS), WEDZ is home to more than 60 enterprises in the ICV industrial chain and has set up several autonomous driving innovative research platforms with Wuhan University, Tongji University, Jilin University, University of Waterloo, and many other Chinese and foreign universities.

The new economy featuring AI, NEV, and quantum communications is flourishing in the zone. In July, WEDZ released its latest talent policy, subsidizing strategic sci-tech talent with 100 million yuan ($14.79 million), founding a 100-million-yuan scholarship, and granting allowances ranging from 40,000 to 160,000 yuan to high-level holders of doctoral and master's degrees, as well as college graduates from universities included in the "double first-class project", when they purchase cars or houses in the zone.
