The Battle of Chibi, which took place more than 1,800 years ago during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280) in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, significantly transformed the historical landscape.
Chiji Mountain was where Huang Gai, a military general who served under the warlord Sun Quan, departed from to feign surrender to troops led by Cao Cao.
Dajun Mountain, Xiaojun Mountain, and Shamao Mountain, which are located in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ), stand opposite Chiji Mountain, and are where Cao Cao's or Sun Quan-Liu Bei allies deployed defense forces.
Cao Cao's failure in the battle laid a foundation for a triple balance of power between the Wei State, Shu State and Wu State.
The legendary stories involved in the Battle of Chibi are widely circulated in WEDZ, which also boasts several related cultural relic sites.
The all-out battle determined the destiny of the armed forces led by Cao Cao, Sun Quan and Liu Bei, and dashed Cao’s dream to unify the three states. Historical data indicate that the total number of soldiers fighting in the battle exceeded 200,000.
