The water of Tanghu Lake in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) used to be rated as Grade-V, but now nearly 60 percent of the lake is at the Grade-III level.

There are many factories around the lake, and the severely polluted water from these factories was dumped into the lake, along with rain. The extent of pollution was far beyond the lake's self-purification capabilities.

To address the problem, Wuhan Shengyu Drainage System Co has designed a targeted sewage diversion solution based on data collected on the surrounding city construction and drainage network.

The transformed waterpipe network is able to identify sewage and send it into sewage disposal works, allowing cleaner water to flow into the lake.

In addition, the government has been raising aquatic animals and vegetation in the lake to restore the eco-system.
