The Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) agreed to jointly build a future technological innovation research institute with Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) on May 18.
Li Jianghua, president of the new research institute, said he believes that the institute will not only embody the integrated development of WEDZ and HUST, but also act as a demonstration pilotscale experiment base to boost technology transfers.
The pilotscale experiment phase of technological achievement requires vast investments, is high risky, and has many uncertainties, which is desirable for neither enterprises nor universities, said Li. The phase is sometimes referred to as "death valley", as many technologies don't enter the market. The mission of the pilotscale experiment base is to help technologies spread across the valley.
The WEDZ future technology innovation research institute is set to be located in the Junshan sci-tech park and will feature a 10,000-square-meter R&D office area, a pilotscale experiment base and incubation area that occupies 30,000 sq ms, and 100 apartments.
