The Wuhan Artificial Intelligence (AI) and New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Technology Research Institute was launched on May 10 in Junshan New City, located in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ).

Jointly established by the zone and the Wuhan University of Technology (WUT), the institute will consist of a NEV industrial technology research center, an AI industrial technology research center, and an AI industry-education integrated demonstration institute.

It will focus on intelligent connected vehicles, smart traffic, and smart equipment manufacturing, and create four platforms for applied technical innovation, public testing, sci-tech services and financing.

"WUT will proactively pursue regional industrial development demand and regional economic needs, and will commit to breaking free from dependence on traditional business models and exploring an effective mechanism to achieve coordination among chains of industries, innovation and education to cultivate more inter-disciplinary applied talents with potent innovative capabilities," said Xin Sijin, Party secretary of the university.

WEDZ shares a long-standing cooperative partnership with WUT that dates back to 2013, when the two sides first agreed to found the NEV industrial technology research center, which is now a part of the newly launched institute. On May 8, the Hubei Provincial Automotive-Grade Chip Technological Innovation Consortium was established, led by Zhang Qingjie, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at WUT.
