Hydrogen energy – the most promising second energy in the 21st century – is one of Wuhan's six emerging industrial clusters.
"The rise of the hydrogen energy sector is coming with State-level deployment," said Tian Mingxing, general manager of Wuhan WUT HyPower Technology Co, who also pointed out that the sector in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) has strengthened Wuhan's hydrogen energy industrial chain.
Wuhan has mastered six of eight core technologies listed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in the hydrogen energy field. The hydrogen-powered car industry in the city is seeing rapid growth, said an official from the Wuhan municipal bureau of economy and informatization.
The National Development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration jointly released a mid- and long-term plan for hydrogen energy industrial development from 2021 to 2035. The document stated that by 2025, China should possess the basic core technologies and manufacturing know-how, be able to produce at least 50,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles, and have a number of hydrogen refueling stations.
Following the plan, Wuhan government made proposals for the industry involving a series of targets to achieve – by 2025, the annual revenue of the city's hydrogen energy industrial chain should hit 50 billion yuan ($7.84 billion) and the number of enterprises above a designated size in the industry should reach 100.
At the same time, Wuhan WUT HyPower Technology Co decided to invest 200 million yuan into the construction of factories in WEDZ to increase the production capacity of membrane electrodes, which have dominated the domestic market and have been sold to more than 10 countries and regions around the world.
