News from Changjiang Daily indicates that Tan Minqiang, deputy of the National People's Congress (NPC) and deputy chief engineer of Dongfeng Motor Co – an auto research and manufacturing giant based in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) – will suggest during the two sessions that the intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) demonstration zone be further extended to ease future traffic congestion.

Along with the advances of a slew of national documents targeting transportation and new infrastructure, emerging technologies such as the cooperative vehicle infrastructure system (CVIS) and intelligent connection technology have been put on a fast development track, and the development of intelligent cars is rising to a new level in terms of supporting policies, standards, innovation and application scenarios.

A large-scale testing and demonstration zone for ICV is vital to the commercialization of high-end intelligent automobiles. After five years of development, there are now more than 50 related national and regional ICV demonstration zones, but they are all small in size and have hindered ICV testing in long-distance scenarios.

Therefore, provinces with relatively strong transport demand are advised to upgrade intra-provincial highway facilities and take gradual steps to form a highway application scenario that allows the passage of both intelligent and non-intelligent cars. Nationally, about 10 special routes for ICV testing are expected to be set up.
