"Sishang" enterprises are enterprises above a designated size in the industry, real estate, construction, wholesale and retail, accommodation and catering sectors.
Data from the statistics bureau of the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) indicate that by the end of February, there was a record 1,315 Sishang enterprises – a year-on-year increase of 8.9 percent.
Enterprises in the industrial sector account for 40.2 percent of the total, those in construction for 17.6 percent, those in wholesale, retail, catering and accommodation for 15.8 percent, those in services for 20.5 percent, and those in real estate for 5.9 percent.
The most well-known industrial Sishang enterprises include Dongfeng Voyah, Midea Heating & Ventilating Equipment Co, Hubei Geely Terrafugia Co, and Zhixin Semiconductor Co.
The figures indicate a robust economy in the zone, largely due to the government's efforts to deepen reforms, delegate power, streamline procedures, optimize services, and improve the zone's business environment.
