A team of officials from the government of Wuhan in Central China's Hubei province launched a research trip to the Hannan modern seed town on Feb 24. The team was accompanied by high-ranking officers of the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ).
In 2020, Wuhan received approval to establish a national modern agricultural scientific and technological innovation center, and the Hannan modern seed town is an indispensible part of its layout.
With a planned area of about 8 square kilometers and a total investment of 120 million yuan ($19 million), the town has cultivated more than 100 types of seeds and is home to eight seed enterprises. Seeds developed there generate an average of 400 million yuan in sales revenue annually.
Wuhan Chuwei Bio-tech Co, one of the eight firms, for example, has developed over 70 types of anti-disease tomatoes and cabbages with high yields and great taste.
Officials urged coordination among enterprises, schools and research institutions and called for the building of local agricultural brands.
