The water environment governance project of the five lakes – Chuanjiang Lake, Longhu Lake, Zhulin Lake, Niuwei Lake and Shangwuqiu Lake – in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) ranked first among 2020 Wuhan municipal engineering projects.

All five lakes are situated in Junshan New City. The projects included the repairing of water outlets, sewer interception, desilting, water-ecosystem restoration, coastal line rehabilitation, and landscape engineering programs around the lakes.

Chuanjiang Lake, for example, was severely damaged due to the aquiculture carried out there, but after four years of strenuous work, the lake now boasts lucid water and a historical and cultural park themed on the Three Kingdoms (220-280).

The water quality of the five lakes has been raised to Class III and IV.

During the 13th Five-Plan period (2016-20), WEDZ made a total investment of 16.98 billion yuan ($2.65 billion) and made progress on 172 water-related programs related to flooding and waterlogging prevention and control, as well as water supply.
