The "Robotaxi", a self-driving taxi developed by Dongfeng Motor Co based in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ), is expected to operate in main urban areas and important transport hubs, such as airports and high-speed train stations, and colleges in Wuhan.
Self-driving taxis are part of the self-driving navigation program initiated by Dongdeng and WEDZ. The program is expected to reach a market scale of 10 billion yuan ($1.57 billion) in five years.
Fitted with three laser radars and eight high-definition cameras, the taxis are capable of sensing their surroundings.
"These devices will be hidden in the car once it goes into mass production, and it will appear no different from a regular taxi," said Bian Ning, who is in charge of the navigation program.
According to Bian, from February last year until now, more than 10,000 residents have tried the taxi, which has driven more than 1 million kilometers in total. Those willing to experience the trial drive can sign up using the "东风领航" (meaning Dongfeng Navigation) application, and input their names and ID card numbers.
