The launch ceremony for the eighth National Public Snow and Ice Season kicked off in Wuhan on Dec 19, along with two sub-venues in Enshi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture and the Shennongjia region participating via video link.

Gou Zhongwen, director of General Administration of Sport of China, and leaders in the Hubei and Wuhan governments were present at the event.

Highlighting people's ever-growing enthusiasm for ice and snow sports, Gou said he expected the active participation of all social groups.

As the main venue for the ice and snow season, the Wuhan Sports Center has successfully held the closing ceremony of the 2019 Military World Games. It also used to be the site of a cabin hospital to receive and treat COVID-19 cases in Wuhan in 2020.

Boasting the largest standardized ice rink with the most complete supporting facilities in China, the center is able to conduct a series of ice events, including figure skating and short track speed skating.
