The Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the list of the 2021 academician cooptation on Nov 18, and Gao Zongyu, chief engineer of China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance and Design Institute, was among those listed. The institute is based in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ), and Gao is the 28th academician from the zone.
Working on the very frontline of bridge research, design and construction projects, Gao has presided over the establishment of more than 50 long-span bridges, and has made extraordinary accomplishments in the design of long-span high-speed railway bridges, multi-tower cable-stayed bridges, and cross-sea bridges.
He has won six State Science and Technology Awards, successfully applied for 23 invention patents, and published 47 dissertations and two monographs, and his outstanding contribution to China's transportation system has been recognized nationwide.
In addition to the 28 academicians, WHDZ currently boasts 185 provincial and municipal high-level talents, 316 development zone-level talents, and 87,000 technicians.
