As the most promising form of energy in the 21st century, hydrogen is one of Wuhan's six emerging industrial clusters. It has been found that many hydrogen energy enterprises and research institutes based in Wuhan have made breakthroughs in the industrial chain, including the making, storage, transportation, and application of hydrogen energy.

The production line project of State Power Investment Co Hydrogen Energy Co at WHDZ is expected to begin operating soon.

Experts said that Wuhan has attracted a number of top domestic hydrogen energy enterprises with core technologies developed independently, and has formed a relatively compete industrial chain. It is very possible that hydrogen energy will become the next 100-billion-yuan ($15 billion) industry in the city.

According to the industrial layout map issued by the government in June, WHDZ will mainly focus on the hydrogen fuel cell industry.

There are already many hydrogen fuel cell manufacturing and research firms based at the zone, such as Wuhan Hydrav Fuel Cell Tech Co, Wuhan Troowin Power System Technology Co, and Cummins Inc. In addition, the zone has offered help to enterprises in launching trial operations for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

There are a total of 21 hydrogen fuel cell buses in use. Since May 2019, these buses have travelled a total of 1.5 million kilometers, reducing carbon emissions by 4 million metric tons.
