Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, is to work with Wuhan University (WHU) to jointly develop a world-class bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry cluster, according to local media reports.
The two parties reached an agreement on developing Wuhan University Heavy Ion Medical Center Project last year.
The two parties will work together to accelerate the construction of Wuhan University Renmin Hospital Heavy Ion Cancer Center, Wuhan University Heavy Ion Medicine Center, and the Wuhan University-Chinese Academy of Sciences Heavy Ion National Engineering Center. They will also set up the School of Biomedical Engineering of Wuhan University, and the Institute of Smart Medical Equipment in WHDZ.
The Wuhan University Heavy Ion Medical Center Project is currently the only comprehensive project in China that integrates medical treatment, scientific research and industrialization. It has a total investment of about 2.4 billion yuan ($371 million).
The project will form an oncology medical industry chain integrating oncology diagnosis and treatment, technological research and development, and personnel training. It will also promote the development of the medical and health industry.
At present, the project is progressing smoothly in WHDZ, and the equipment installation process is about to be carried out. It is expected to be completed and put into operation in the second half of 2022.
