Five major projects costing a total of 8.1 billion yuan ($1.25 billion) will be developed in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone, or WHDZ – located in Wuhan city, in Central China's Hubei province – following agreements signed on June 20, according to local media reports.

The Wuhan University of Technology project will develop the New Energy Automobile Industry Technology Research Institute, the Artificial Intelligence Industry Technology Research Institute and the Artificial Intelligence Industry-Education Integration Demonstration Institute in the WHDZ.

These are expected to boost the deep integration of artificial intelligence with materials, computers, information, automation, transportation, automobiles and electromechanics.

A commercial complex project being funded by China Merchants Real Estate (Wuhan) Co will bring to the zone commercial ventures such as sports and leisure businesses, automobile experience centers and immersive theaters – as well as industrial formats such as scientific and technological innovation services, business services and information technology ventures.

Meanwhile, the Dongfeng Autonomous Driving Pilot Project will be funded and developed by Dongfeng Motor Corporation.

The major auto manufacturer will work with domestic autonomous driving technology companies and well-known universities, to build an autonomous driving research and development test operation platform that is the largest and most advanced of its kind in China.

The project is expected to build an ecosystem of leading intelligent-networked core technologies, key resources and support capabilities and form a complete industry supply chain.
