A 30 million yuan ($6.54 million) "smart microcapsule" project is to settle in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province, following the signing of an agreement by WHDZ and Wuhan Institute of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on March 29.

According to reports, microcapsule technology is a rapidly developing material packaging technology and is listed as one of the key high-tech research and development areas for the 21st century. It does not damage the original chemical properties of the target material, but gradually reveals the function of the target object through some external stimuli, relying on the shielding effect of the capsule wall to protect the core material.

After years of research and development, Wuhan Institute of Advanced Technology of CAS has made breakthroughs in the field of smart microcapsules, forming three series of smart color-changing microcapsules, smart temperature control microcapsules and smart textile materials.

Next, the institute will increase its research and development efforts to promote the application and industrialization of smart microcapsules in flexible displays, medical implant equipment and other fields.

The Wuhan Institute of Advanced Technology, CAS is an important scientific and technological innovation enterprise introduced by WHDZ.

Since its establishment in the development zone in 2019, the institute has attracted more than 10 overseas high-end talents, including foreign academicians, and established five R&D centers for electronic information materials, plasma functional coatings, and black scales.

In 2020, it achieved an operating income of more than 30 million yuan, and three of its projects have achieved commercialization.
