Dou Xiankang, president of Wuhan University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shao Xinyu, Party committee secretary of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, both attended the convention.

Wang Zhonglin, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee and Party chief of Wuhan city, showed his respect to the experts and scholars, hailing them as the city's most precious assets. All major scientific accomplishments were the result of their collective wisdom.

Wang also explained the key role of "talents", and said that these should be the city's first priority. Measures will be taken to cultivate a range of globally-influential talents in strategic science and technologies.

Ten scientific and technological innovation initiatives were issued during the meeting, which each targeted one of the "bottle-necks" that China faces.
