Wuhan launches corn freight trains, linking with Northeast China

A train full of 100 TEUs of corn departed from Wuhan in Central China's Hubei province on Jan 9, according to local media reports, bound for Guiyang in Southwest China's Guizhou province.

The journey marks the launch of a new corn freight train service linking Northeast China with Wuhan and Southwest China.

This is a strategic move for Wuhan in terms of opening up the Northeast China-Wuhan channels to Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan, and ensuring the stability and safety of the food crop industry supply chains.

Northeast China is the largest corn producing area in China, and Southwest China is one of the most important regions in the country for corn sales.

Previously, there were two modes of transportation for corn from Northeast China to Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan. One was water transportation, which took about 25 days; the other was rail or road transportation.

The newly-launched corn freight train is scheduled to make four trips a week.

The opening of this strategic channel will enable seamless connections between railways, ports and shipping routes. It will promote economic exchanges between the Northeast and Central and Southwest China, as well as promoting the development of modern logistics.

Nest, Wuhan will also set up transportation for wheat, soybeans, and rice from Northeast China to Southwest China.
