Wuhan, capital city of Central China's Hubei province, is set to add a Fourth Ring Road, with construction already underway, according to local media reports.

The Fourth Ring Road is an important transportation project within the "Wuhan Overall City Planning (2010-2020)" scheme approved by the State Council.

It is an important link in the province's planned "seven vertical, five horizontal and three ring roads" expressway network. It is primarily aimed at freight transport, supplemented by passenger transport.

The Fourth Ring Road, passing through Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone, is positioned as a fast track for freight transportation. Its construction is intended to free the Third Ring Road from the burden of "mixed passenger and freight" traffic.

In addition, the construction of the Fourth Ring Road is of great significance in consolidating and enhancing Wuhan's status as a comprehensive transportation hub, and in building a modern logistics base in Central China.

The Fourth Ring Road can not only exert the overall function of the road network and relieve the traffic pressure on the Ring Expressway and the Third Ring Road, but will also effectively connect the transportation hubs, logistics parks and industrial parks of the city.

At the same time, the Fourth Ring Road will provide a broader space for the layout of Wuhan's comprehensive transportation facilities, and will closely connect Wuhan's peripheral railway hubs and Wuhan Tianhe International Airport.
