The 2020 (Sixth) Wuhan Online Shopping Festival officially opened in Wuhan, capital city of Central China's Hubei province, with a launch ceremony held on Nov 18, according to local media reports.

The month-long event will include various activities such as the Alibaba Wuhan Local Life Festival and the "Cloud Shopping in Wuhan" Live Festival.

During the month, online service platforms such as Alipay, Hema Fresh, and Alitrip will set up special areas for online shopping festivals, issuing consumer vouchers and launching shopping subsidies.

The "Cloud Shopping in Wuhan" Live Festival will launch multiple live-streaming events to promote famous and high-quality Wuhan products, as well as those of time-honored brands, aiming to enhance the popularity of Wuhan products.

An import commodity themed festival will also be held, during which large shopping malls such as Zhongbai, Wushang, Metro, Carrefour, Wal-Mart, Aeon and Wanda will hold online and offline themed displays of imported goods in order to boost sales.

Last year, the scale of e-commerce transactions in Wuhan city hit 1 trillion yuan ($152.13 billion), of which online retail sales reached 252.46 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 22.79 percent.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 this year, traditional offline consumption has been affected to a certain extent.

In response to the impact of the epidemic on the consumer market, Wuhan has vigorously supported e-commerce platforms and traditional companies to continuously explore and innovate, and develop new business models such as live-streaming e-commerce.
