State Power Investment Co (SPIC) is to invest in the construction of the Central China Hydrogen Energy Industry Base and R&D Center in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province, according to local media reports.

In May 2017, SPIC established a subsidiary in WHDZ - SPIC Hydrogen Energy Co - which is a tech enterprise engaged in the technological innovation of the hydrogen energy industry and the development and manufacturing of high-precision products.

The company focuses on R&D and industrialization platforms in four areas: fuel cells and key technologies, hydrogen power systems, key technologies for hydrogen production and storage, and hydrogen safety.

According to company officials, the company's core product at present is the proton exchange membrane, the core component of the production of hydrogen fuel cells.

After pre-application testing, the products' performance is comparable to similar foreign products and they meet the conditions for industrialization.
