Wuhan, capital city of Central China's Hubei province, has been approved for the construction of a port-type national logistics hub.

That's according to a list co-released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport.

A total of 22 logistics hubs were selected on the list for national logistics hub. Wuhan was the only city in Hubei province to win the honor.

The Wuhan port-type national logistics hub is expected to cover an area of 4,750 mu (317 hectares).

Wuhan is at the strategic intersection of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Belt and Road. It is a rare inland area that integrates national transportation channels and hubs such as rail, water, highway, and air transportation.

Ports are basic and pivotal facilities and an important support structure for economic development.

To fully develop the function of the Yangtze River - China's golden waterway - and promote the economic development of inland cities, it is important to accelerate the construction of Wuhan as a national logistics hub.

In December 2018, the National Logistics Hub Layout and Construction Plan - co-released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport - listed Wuhan as a carrier city of five national logistics hubs: land port, port, production service, business service and airport.

According to Wuhan officials, the logistics industry in Wuhan is developing well.

In 2019, the total freight volume in Wuhan was 675.55 million metric tons, and total social logistics exceeded 4 trillion yuan ($598 billion). The ratio of total social logistics cost to GDP was close to 13.6 percent.
