The city of Wuhan in Central China's Hubei province is set to develop a national, new generation artificial intelligence (AI) innovation development pilot zone, after gaining the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology on Sept 4, according to local media reports.

According to Wuhan's Plan for Building a National New Generation Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Development Pilot Zone, Wuhan will construct the zone based on its advantages in scientific and technological resources, industrial foundations, and artificial intelligence application scenarios.

It will strengthen the research and development of cutting-edge AI technologies and core technologies in areas including smart chips, intelligent connected vehicles, and network security, and promote the deep integration of AI with the real economy, smart cities, and people's livelihoods.

Wuhan will issue related supporting policies and establish new mechanisms in terms of talent training and introduction, open data sharing, diversified investment, and the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

It will focus on the cultivation of leading artificial intelligence enterprises, explore new development models for R&D institutions, and create an open ecosystem bringing together industry, universities, research and application, and the collaborative innovation of both large and small enterprises.

In addition, it will conduct AI social experiments, implement a new generation of AI governance principles, and establish AI ethical norms.

Next, the Ministry of Science and Technology will support and guide Hubei province to promote the construction of the Wuhan AI pilot zone, track and evaluate the progress of the pilot zone's construction, and provide incentives and support based on the results of this evaluation.
