The Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ), located in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei province, has been encouraging its resident companies to make the transition to intelligent manufacturing and production in order to reduce raw material losses, reduce operating costs and improve output efficiency, according to local media reports.

At present, a total of five companies in the WHDZ - including Gree Electric Appliances and Chassis Brakes International (Wuhan) Co - have been granted the designation of a Wuhan Intelligent Renovation Demonstration Project.

An additional 12 companies, including Dongfeng Mahle Thermal System Co and Wuhan Fanzhou Chuetsu Metal Co, have received subsidies from the Wuhan Intelligent Renovation Project.

Officials said that last year, a total of 76 enterprises in the WHDZ completed intelligent diagnoses and evaluations; the most undertaken by all districts and zones in the city.

The WHDZ is also developing its digital economy, with an emphasis put on the construction of 5G infrastructure.

This year, the zone plans to complete the installation of the first batch of 500 5G base stations and, as of Aug 17, a total of 439 5G base stations have been completed. The completion rate has reached 87.8 percent, meaning the WHDZ ranks first in Wuhan city.

The National Intelligent Connected Vehicle (Wuhan) Test and Demonstration Zone, officially launched in September 2019 in the WHDZ, is currently the only demonstration zone for multi-scenario smart car applications in China.

A 28-kilometer test road for intelligent road network vehicle demonstrations and applications has been completed in the zone, with 33 5G base stations set up along the road. Combined with the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, the demonstration zone has become one of the most advanced V2X vehicle-road collaborative test areas in China.

According to WHDZ officials, by the end of this year, the WHDZ will achieve full coverage of 5G signals in the zone, and in-depth coverage of 5G signals in key areas such as industrial clusters, schools, and residential areas.
