An automobile summit plotting the future direction of next-generation automobile development opened on June 29 in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) -- located in Wuhan city in Central China's Hubei province -- according WHDZ officials.

The summit invited experts and industrial leaders including Zhang Xiaohuan, associate research fellow of the Institute of Public Administration, Development Research Center of the State Council; Fu Hong, dean of the School of Economics and Trade at Hubei University of Economics and Liu Lingjun, general manager of Sunac China WHDZ Co.

The WHDZ is widely rated as one of the front runners in Wuhan city's auto industry.

Its performance has ranked it top for many consecutive years among the national development zones in Central and West China. Officials said it ranked sixth in terms of its industrial foundation.

They said it has become the one of the important advanced manufacturing clusters in Wuhan city and in the province.

According to Fu Hong, the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on both the supply and demand sides of the automotive industry. But WHDZ-based companies have been making strides in their work and production resumption.

Officials said Dongfeng Honda reached full capacity in production in April and vehicle sales increased by nine percent in April, higher than the national average growth rate of five percent.

Fu Hong urged advisory scientific research, finance, and human resources institutions to participate deeply in the real economy.

They should focus on supporting the shortcomings and weaknesses in the development of the automotive industry.

Fu added that they should carry out scientific research innovation, financial innovation and talent cultivation innovation projects to build a modern automotive industrial ecosystem.
