Dunkou Economic Development Zone -- located in the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in novel coronavirus-hit central Hubei province -- has included an innovative door-to-door delivery service among measures taken to ensure the daily lives of locals since the outbreak, according to WHDZ officials.

Officials said there are 71 elderly people living alone in the Feicui Jiuxi community in Dunkou.

Zhang Di, a staff member of the community, has to call or visit these special households and ask carefully to understand their living needs and physical conditions.

Some of the senior residents have basic medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes and need regular deliveries of medicines and vegetables.

Zhang arranges community staff members to go to supermarkets and pharmacies to help purchase and deliver the items to the elderly.

After the purchases, the staff members disinfect the goods and provide home delivery.

Since the lockdown of Wuhan city on Jan 23, the community staff members have provided door-to-door services for the senior residents some 162 times.

In addition to collecting residents' health information on WeChat, telephone and QQ, the community staff members take body temperature measurements for some of the households in the community.
