A total of 1,670 sanitation workers have stepped up efforts to fight the novel coronavirus in Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WHDZ).
Forty-five sanitation workers volunteered to clean local hospitals, including 22 at the West Campus of Wuhan Union Hospital and People's Hospital of Hannan District.
They have been working extra shifts to collect waste and transport garbage, scheduling at least three comprehensive cleans of the city every day.
An average of 260 tons of domestic waste from hospitals, markets, and commercial outlets needs to be disposed of every day.
The nine sanitation units in the zone have set up more than 40 special disinfection shifts to sanitize a large number of garbage containers, public toilets, markets, and hospitals, covering a public area of over 400,000 square meters.
Also, 750 garbage bins for used face masks have been set up to avoid infections from discarded masks.
The sanitation workers are supplied with protective equipment for their work, including face masks, and their temperatures are taken before and after each shift.
