Massive upgrade of streetlights brightens Wuhan city

Updated: 2020-01-23

Wuhan, capital city of Central China’s Hubei province, now has a clearer nighttime skyline in the wake of the upgrading of a massive 37,000 streetlights along 142 arterial roads, according to local media reports.

The city has replaced the original high pressure sodium, or HPSL, lamps with LED energy-saving lamps, officials said.

According to officials from the urban construction bureau of Wuhan, in some cities sodium lamps along arterial roads have encountered problems, such as serious light decay and inconsistent lighting sources.

By the end of October last year, Wuhan had implemented road lighting enhancements, replacing 30,000 street lamps with LED lights.

Another 7,000 HPSLs were replaced with LED lights recently, to give residents a brighter, better living environment.

Officials say the newly added LED energy-saving streetlights are an environmentally friendly and energy-saving light source with large brightness and good color rendering.

They offer better stability, lighting quality, service life and power-saving and can reduce energy consumption by 15 percent.
