Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) ranked 10th among the 219 national-level economic development zones, as announced by the Ministry of Commerce Jan 17.
According to the assessment and evaluation of the comprehensive development level of national economic development zones in 2019 released on the day, WHDZ continues to take the first place among national-level zones in Central and West China.
National economic development zones are economic growth engines in China.
In recent years, the GDP, fiscal and tax revenues of the 219 national economic development zones accounted for about 10 percent of the national total. The actual utilization of foreign capital (including reinvestment by foreign-invested enterprises) and import and export volume accounted for about 20 percent of the national total.
Located in the southwest of Wuhan, the capital of Central China's Hubei province, the WHDZ started construction in May 1991. It was approved by the State Council as a national economic and technological development zone in April 1993.
It was in the first batch of national-level economic development zones in Central and West China.
After 29 years of growth and development, WHDZ has formed a modern industrial cluster supported by automobiles and parts, electronics, food and beverages.
In 2019, WHDZ maintained steady economic growth with the total output of industries above a designated scale hitting 300 billion yuan ($43 bllion).
