Some 41 inspiring self-driving vehicles in 11 categories were displayed at the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone -- also known as the WHDZ -- on Oct 23, attracting the keen attention of Chinese and foreign journalists.

Adding to the fun, the latest self-driving bus equipped with 5G communications -- as well as Beidou high-precision positioning technologies -- was put through its paces.

Journalists from home and abroad caught a ride on it recently in the National Intelligent Connected Vehicle (Wuhan) Test and Demonstration Zone located in the WHDZ.

The bus can accommodate eight passengers. Lidar -- the remote sensing method using laser light pulses to measure target distances – as well as sensors on the bus can detect passenger movements and automatically close the door once passengers have boarded.

After the bus started, driving, steering and shifting gears were automatically operated. A security officer sat in the cabin in case of any unexpected situations, to ensure flawlessly safe driving.

A new 28-kilometer test road for intelligent road network vehicle demonstrations and applications has been completed in the test and demonstration zone. This is the first intelligent network-connected vehicle demonstration area in China, based on full coverage by the 5G communications technology V2X vehicle road coordination system.

Various auto-driving configurations for testing different types of vehicles -- such as buses, sanitation vehicles, taxis and logistics vehicles -- have been added.
