Subsidies were handed out to impoverished students in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, capital of Central China’s Hubei province, on Aug 23.
Hundreds of people, including government officials, local students, parents, teachers, and business representatives, took part in the event.
Feng Aiming, chief of the zone’s publicity department, expressed his gratitude to Wuhan Huatian Group for its donations over the past 11 years and encouraged students who receive awards to study hard and help others in need.
The event was first launched in 2009 and more than 2 million yuan ($279,800) has been granted to 304 impoverished high-school graduates, allowing them to attend university.
This year, 10 high-school students received 5,000 yuan each, while 14 received 3,000 yuan each.
The amount was based on the students’ applications, as well as on evaluations by schools and government departments of the students’ gaokao scores, university admissions, and family conditions.
