A meeting on the development of Hubei province's new energy and intelligent networked vehicle sector was held in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province, from April 27 to 28.

Experts attending the event included Zhou Ji, academic of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Wang Yunpeng, vice president of Beihang University, Chen Hong, professor at Jilin University, and Chen Gan, chief engineer at the technology center of Dongfeng Motor Group Corporation.

This is the third year that industry experts have gathered in Wuhan to offer advice on the development of the city's automobile sector.

The automobile industry plays a significant role in the province's industrial economy. It is currently home to more than 1,400 auto and auto parts companies, among which 21 are vehicle companies with an annual production capacity of 3.9 million vehicles.

As an important hub for China's automobile industry, Wuhan currently has seven automobile companies and more than 500 auto parts companies.

Six of Wuhan's automobile companies are stationed in the WHDZ. The zone manufactured 1.05 million vehicles in 2018, accounting for 43.6 percent of Hubei's total and achieving an output value of 260 billion yuan ($38.22 billion).

The zone is currently accelerating construction on its national new energy and intelligent networked vehicle center, which will play an important role in promoting the transformation and development of China's automobile industry.

During the event, an advisory committee was unveiled to offer guidance on the construction of the new center.

Experts at the meeting said that the new energy and intelligent networked vehicles are a trend of the future, and that Wuhan and the WHDZ should seize the opportunity to become an innovation hub for new energy and smart vehicles.
