The Cummins East Asia R&D Center celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) on Aug 26, bringing together company leadership, partners, and employees. The celebration reflected on the center's growth history and revealed its strategic emphasis on zero-carbon technologies.
Cummins Co, a global power technology provider, established the Cummins East Asia R&D Center in July 2005 in collaboration with Dongfeng Motor Co. Located in WEDZ, it became China’s first joint-venture diesel engine R&D center. Over the years, the company has expanded its projects in fuel systems, power plants, and more, creating a full-value chain business system that integrates R&D, advanced manufacturing, and distribution services.
The center has broadened its scope beyond traditional diesel engines to include natural gas, hydrogen, electric drive, and other zero-carbon energy solutions, contributing to Cummins' global technological innovation.
The event showcased several cutting-edge technologies, including a multi-fuel engine platform, hydrogen internal combustion engines, and electric drivetrains. One notable innovation is the 15-liter off-highway engine, developed entirely in Wuhan and now set to enter the US market. By 2025, the center is expected to account for 20 percent of Cummins' global R&D efforts, rising to nearly 30 percent by 2026.
