WHDZ sports events make Hubei top 10

Three sporting events hosted by Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone (WHDZ) were selected as “top 10 sports events” in Hubei province for 2017, on Jan 30. 

The three events were the 2017 Badminton Asia Championships, the FIFA World Cup Russia Asian Qualifiers (China – Uzbekistan), and the 2017 World Fly-in Expo.

The 2017 Badminton Asia Championships were held at Wuhan Sports Center in WHDZ from April 25-30, attracting 259 players from 21 countries and regions in Asia, including Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long. 

The event also attracted nearly 160 journalists from 70 media organizations at home and abroad. 

In addition, the Badminton Asia Championships will be held in Wuhan annually from 2017 to 2020, becoming a representative sporting event for the city.

The FIFA World Cup Russia Asian Qualifiers (China – Uzbekistan) kicked off at Wuhan Sports Center on Aug 31, 2017, with 52,000 spectators in attendance. 

China eventually beat Uzbekistan 1-0.

The 2017 World Fly-in Expo took place at Hannan General Aviation Airport in WHDZ from Nov 4 to 7, attracting nearly 500,000 visitors and more than 800 reporters from 600 media organizations around the world.  

More than 1,000 aircraft were showcased during the expo. 

In addition, the expo witnessed 19 deals worth 145 billion yuan ($23 billion) signed during the event, covering areas including general aviation manufacturing, assembly, and satellite technology applications –– effectively promoting the industrial transformation and upgrading of WHDZ.

With the success of the 2017 World Fly-in Expo, Wuhan has become a regular host of international air sports events.
